Seeds of Change
This is no ordinary pine cone lamp. Developed by Belgian design innovator Jan Van Mol
and produced by Materialise, a company that has made an art of rapid prototyping, it also sends a message
to creative types: “Always look for a perfect symbiosis of human intellect and nature’s ingenuity,”
Van Mol says. With the help of Michaella Janse van Vuuren, an artist who holds a Ph.D. in electrical engineer-
ing, he’s working on powering the Pine Cone Light with little solar panels so it can hang on a tree
branch or rest casually in a garden. Expect to see the final product at the Milan Furniture Fair in April,
as part of Materialise.MGX’s flora-inspired Bouquet 2009 collection.
